Jack was seated in Marco’s drawing room, reading the day’s newspaper. Marco and Gabriele had invited him to accompany them to the palazzo but neither had seemed surprised when Jack had declined the invitation. He didn’t think Perry would mind if Jack were to go there without him, yet without Perry it failed to hold the same allure. But perhaps he would need to rediscover pleasure without Perry’s presence if his concerns proved true and Perry were to leave him to return to England.

He was taken entirely by surprise when shortly after ten o’clock, Marco’s butler announced Signor Peregrine Sinclair to see Jack. He cast the paper aside and rose to his feet, his face matching the delighted smile that Perry wore.

“I did not expect to see you this evening,” he said. “What has happened to your friend Lord Bullingdon? Please tell me he is now at the bottom of a canal.”

“It is entirely possible,” Perry confessed with a scapegrace grin, “for I do not know what has happened to him. I waited for him in the Rialto for more than an hour but did not see him again. I strongly suspect he received an invitation to a gentleman’s bed and did not think it necessary to inform me of such a fact.”

He did not look as put out by such behaviour as Jack thought he should. “And perhaps,” he continued, closing in against Jack and running his hand through his hair, “I did not wait for quite so long as I should have done were I a better host, for I realised what freedom from his company would mean.”

“That you might return home to do your household accounts,” Jack surmised.

“Why, yes, that is it exactly. Thank you for reminding me of such a thing, Jack, for I believe I may have become distracted—”

As Perry released him and turned away, Jack gripped his wrist and swung him back round, laughing. “Fool,” he said. “Be quiet and kiss me.”

Perry did not need telling twice.
